How Many Meters of Fabric Do You Need for a Shalwar Kameez?

It sounds like a simple question — but "how many meters do I need?" is one of the most searched queries in Pakistani fabric shopping, and the answer actually depends on several factors most people don't consider. Get it wrong and you either waste fabric or end up with a suit that's too short.

Here's the complete guide.

The Short Answer

  • 4 meters — Standard kameez + shalwar for average height (5'5” to 5'9”)
  • 5 meters — Taller frames, longer kameez styles, or structured cuts
  • 6 meters — Full suit with generous cut, very tall frames, or tailors who use more fabric

What Affects How Much Fabric You Need?

1. Your Height

This is the biggest factor. A man at 5'5” and a man at 6'1” cannot both use 4 meters and get the same result. Taller men need longer kameez length and more fabric for the shalwar. As a rule:

  • Under 5'8” — 4 meters is usually sufficient
  • 5'8” to 5'11” — 4 or 5 meters depending on kameez length preference
  • 6'0” and above — 5 or 6 meters recommended

2. Kameez Length

Pakistani kameez styles vary significantly in length:

  • Short kameez (above the knee): 4 meters is almost always enough
  • Standard kameez (just below the knee): 4–5 meters depending on height
  • Long kameez / kurta style (mid-calf): 5–6 meters

3. Your Tailor's Cutting Style

Some tailors are conservative with fabric; others cut generously for a better drape. If you have a tailor who consistently uses more fabric, always go one size up. Ask them directly — a good tailor will tell you exactly how much they need for your measurements.

4. Shalwar Style

  • Slim/straight shalwar: Uses less fabric
  • Traditional wide-cut shalwar: Uses significantly more fabric
  • Patiala or pleated styles: Can use up to 2 extra meters for the shalwar alone

5. Fabric Width

Most Pakistani suit fabrics come in standard widths (around 58–60 inches). If you're buying a narrower fabric, you may need an extra half meter to compensate. Always confirm the width before purchasing.

A Practical Sizing Table

Height Kameez Style Recommended Meters
Under 5'6” Standard 4 meters
5'6” – 5'9” Standard 4–5 meters
5'9” – 6'0” Standard / Long 5 meters
6'0” and above Any style 5–6 meters
Any height Wide shalwar / Patiala Add 1–2 meters

When in Doubt, Go Up

Leftover fabric is not a problem — it can be used for a matching cap, pocket square, or kept as repair fabric. A suit that's too short because you bought one meter less cannot be fixed. Always err on the side of more.
